Our holiday apartment is located in the middle of the beautiful Axarquía region, in the municipality of Almáchar. A fantastic region with white mountain villages such as Almáchar, El Borge and Moclinejo. There is a multitude of traditional fiestas, plenty of hiking trails with beautiful views, and only a 25-minute drive from the coast. The center of Almáchar can be reached by car within 5 minutes and can be walked via a beautiful route in about 25 minutes.

The apartment has been completely renovated and modern, but tastefully decorated and is located in a rural casa with authentic Spanish elements. Much love and attention has been paid to a complete and beautiful interior. The apartment is on the ground floor and has an adjoining very spacious garden with lots of privacy and contains a swimming pool, terrace and BBQ. The apartment is suitable for a maximum of 2 people.

About us

We, Marcel, Martine and our daughter Kiki, emigrated from the Netherlands, North Brabant to Andalusia in the spring of 2023 with our tomcat Casper. After a search along the coast of Granada and Malaga, we finally settled in Almáchar where we fell in love with the atmosphere and appearance of the house, the view, the free feeling it gives and the lively town of Almáchar 5 minutes away made it complete.

Climate of Axarquia

The climate of the Axarquía region is known for its mildness and is one of the most pleasant in Europe. The area is characterised by a Mediterranean climate with warm, dry summers and mild, more humid winters.

The proximity of the Mediterranean Sea helps to temper extreme temperatures, making summers pleasantly warm with average temperatures around 25°C to 30°C, while winters remain mild with averages around 12°C to 17°C. Rainfall in Axarquía is relatively low and falls mainly in the autumn and winter months, which contributes to the dry summers. The region benefits from more than 300 sunny days per year, making it an ideal destination for both tourists and residents who want to enjoy the outdoors.

These favourable weather conditions also make Axarquía a fertile region for agriculture, particularly for the cultivation of tropical and subtropical fruits such as avocados and mangoes.

Walking

Walking in the La Axarquía region is a true discovery of one of the most varied landscapes of Andalusia.

Nestled between the Mediterranean Sea and the mountains, this region offers walkers a unique combination of coastal paths, mountain hikes and routes through the white villages. With a mild climate all year round, La Axarquía is the perfect destination for lovers of outdoor activities.

Malaga

Not to forget is the nearby city of Málaga. Really a must see if you are in our region. This city has the ultimate atmosphere that you are looking for in a Southern European city. Situated on the coast, which means there is a great climate. There is plenty to visit, recommendations are the cathedral in the old center, the Alcazaba, Calle Larios (large shopping street), the harbor, playa Malagueta and the old center around Calle Granada.

Frigiliana

As soon as you enter Frigiliana you feel the romantic atmosphere that this white village radiates. The narrow car-free streets with the white painted houses with red slate roofs immediately give you a Spanish feeling. It is not for nothing that it has been declared the ‘most beautiful village in Andalusia’. Frigiliana is one of the best preserved Moorish villages, there are cozy restaurants and small shops with authentic ceramics, Moorish accessories and nice souvenirs.

Nerja

It is definitely recommended to go to Nerja for a day. The caves alone are worth it, but also the atmosphere in the center with wonderful shops, nice authentic restaurants, small bays, the beautiful views and the Balcony of Europe make Nerja a popular destination.

Torre del Mar

Torre del Mar on the Costa del Sol in Spain is a seaside resort in the municipality of Vélez-Málaga, province of Málaga. In the summer months it is very touristy here but the rest of the year it is pleasantly busy. The restaurants on the beach around the old lighthouse are very popular, they make the most delicious paella and sardines from the fire. A four kilometre long boulevard runs along the sea and there are several beaches. Many events are organised in Torre del Mar such as the annual festival, the funfair and the air show.

Seville

Seville is the capital of Andalusia. Here you will still find the typical Andalusian culture, gastronomy and atmosphere. In Seville you will be amazed. For example, visit the royal palace Alcázar Real de Sevilla or the Plaza de España, one of the most famous squares in Spain. In the narrow alleys you will find plenty of cozy restaurants and tapas bars. Seville has, besides Madrid, the only bullring that is still in use.

Cordoba

In addition to the world-famous Mezquita mosque-cathedral, the Spanish city of Cordoba has many other sights and must-see highlights to offer, including those from Roman and Moorish times. Córdoba is perhaps the most surprising city in Andalusia. Be sure to visit the Mezquita, this unique mosque and cathedral in one is known for its characteristic decorated arches. You should also not miss the Alcazar de los Reyes Cristianos, the colorful patios of Córdoba and a walk over the Puente Romano. You can also eat delicious food in Córdoba and the city has many of its own authentic dishes.

Granada

Granada is one of the most special cities in Spain, you will fall in love with it immediately but you have to find the right places. In addition to the world-famous Alhambra, you will find many more beautiful and unique sights here. The Moorish influences are still clearly visible here today and sometimes you really imagine yourself in Morocco instead of Spain, the cozy suburbs complete the visit, where people suddenly sell beers from a window of a house at a lookout point towards the Alhambra, or you can still taste the atmosphere of the past on a square.

Vélez-Málaga

As the capital of the Axarquía region, Vélez-Málaga is the largest and most influential city in the area, due to its history, culture and wealth. The fertile lands along the river, dedicated to fruit, vegetables and subtropical crops, highlight its important agricultural role.

Sierra de Tejeda

The Sierra de Tejeda-Almijara y Alhama is part of a region known as the Axarquía (Moorish for ‘Land in the East’). It is wedged between Malaga and the Sierra Nevada and rises spectacularly behind the busy and narrow coastal strip of the Costa Tropical. Although the eastern part of the Axarquía (where the natural park is located) offers the most nature, the whole area is interesting to explore. Especially if you don’t have much time and want to head into the mountains immediately after arriving in Malaga.

Rincón de la Victoria

Rincón de la Victoria, located on the coast, is a modern town with beautiful beaches and tourist facilities, the place is mainly inhabited by alternative young people. Many families, many of whom have a second home here, also enjoy this place. Along the coast there are plenty of places to eat, the beach is relatively quiet. Despite its modernity, the town also retains the charm of the Axarquía, with picturesque places such as the old village of Benagalbón and historical monuments such as the castle of Bezmiliana.

Caleta de Velez

Situated between the towns of Torre del Mar and Algarrobo, Caleta de Velez is known for its fishing port, the most important in the province. This picturesque coastal village is not only famous for its port, but also for its attractive, less touristy beach. The best day to visit Caleta is Saturday, when the weekly market is held. Nice stalls with jewelry, ceramics, clothing and local products. Afterwards you can enjoy a delicious meal and/or drink at the port.

Algarobbo

Algarobbo consists like many places of a small historical village center with a number of local shops and bars, it is characterized by the steep narrow streets where the, mostly older, residents with walking sticks make their way to their front door and chat at the shop. There is also an Algarobbo Costa where the relatively lively boulevard is a nice counterpart to the village.

Sierra Nevada

The Sierra Nevada is the high mountain range that lies near the city of Granada. Sierra Nevada means ‘snowy mountain range’ in Spanish and from Granada you can see the snowy mountain peaks in the far surroundings. After the Alps, this is the highest mountain range in Europe, with a total of 16 mountain peaks over 3000 meters high. These mountains were formed more than 6 million years ago by tectonic movements and the highest mountain is the Mulhacén (3482 m).
